Dr. Thomas Hodgkiss, Interventional Radiologist and Southern VIP Managing Physician

Dr. Thomas Hodgkiss is a Board Certified Interventional Radiologist.  A native of Tennessee, he attended Vanderbilt University and earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia. He earned his medical degree at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine and completed a fellowship program in Interventional Radiology at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis.

Dr. Hodgkiss has served as Assistant Clinical Professor of Radiology at the University of Tennessee Health Center. He has focused his practice on interventional vascular disease and interventional oncology.

He has cared for and treated cancer patients at two large cancer centers for over 15 years.  He has served as a consultant, researcher, and physician educator for the Medtronic Company in the specialty of vertebral tumor ablation and the treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysms with the minimally invasive aortic stent graft. He also formerly worked in collaboration with AngioDynamics, developing and advancing microwave treatments for soft tissue cancers.

Dr. Hodgkiss’ primary area of treatment is critical limb ischemia and treatment of peripheral diabetic vascular disease, particularly treating the small blood vessels below the knee and into the foot. He has performed hundreds of angioplasties, atherectomies, vascular stents, and stent graft placements. He is particularly passionate about treating patients with critical limb ischemia (CLI), most often seen in diabetic patients. Dr. Hodgkiss has performed several hundred Foot RescueTM procedures, opening the small blood vessels within the foot and below the knee.

He has extensive experience in the treatment of vascular occlusive disease and embolization therapy, having performed several hundred embolization treatments for both metastatic cancer and benign fibroid disease of the uterus.

Dr. Hodgkiss also has a strong interest in interventional pain therapies and kyphoplasty treatment for vertebral compression fractures with the subsequent treatment of underlying osteoporosis. Dr. Hodgkiss has performed more than 1000 kyphoplasty procedures (including more than 50 spine jack treatments), 200+ cancerous bone ablations, more than 1000 soft tissue tumor ablations, and over 10,000 biopsies.  He offers a wide range of pain and vascular management techniques utilizing fluoroscopic guidance, CT, and ultrasound. Some of the pain procedures include therapeutic discography, stem cell injections, lumbar/thoracic/cervical epidural injections, facet and/or medial branch blocks, targeted individual nerve blocks, joint/bursal injections, spinal pain pump placement, and spinal cord stimulator placements.  Visit our conditions and treatments section for a full list of treatments available at Southern VIP.
